Adis are pleased to welcome a wide variety of innovative article types, offering authors varying avenues to explore beyond traditional publishing options. These innovative article types can be considered by all Adis journals and undergo the same rigorous peer review as our other article types.
Podcast and Vodcast Articles
Standalone peer-reviewed podcast articles- an offering catered to today’s audience of digital natives.
All Adis journals can publish peer-reviewed podcast/vodcast articles, which can help to extend the reach of publications and increase engagement for those who prefer to consume content “on the go”.
With their own DOI, these standalone, commentary-style articles include an embedded audio/video file in the HTML, alongside a typeset transcript. Podcast/vodcast articles typically involve authors discussing topics of clinical relevance such as a clinical trial, pivotal manuscript, or advances in a particular therapeutic area. To maximise reach, open access podcasts can also be hosted on podcast streaming sites, such as Apple Music and Spotify.
How the format is performing:
- Adis has published over 100 podcast articles, with numbers increasing year-on-year across multiple therapy areas and journals.
- Several have reached 10,000 downloads within three years of publication — comparable to, and sometimes higher than, similar non-podcast articles.
- They are well cited as well as widely accessed, several reaching double-digit citation counts. High-performing topics include real-world evidence, clinical decision-making, treatment guidance, and expert clinician discussions.
- Podcast content has been picked up in external news coverage and is listened to worldwide. Additional digital features, such as infographics and plain language summaries can help enhance engagement and reach.

Patient Physician Perspective Articles
Patient-centric, commentary-style articles designed to highlight the patient experience.
Patient-physician perspective articles aim to highlight patient experience to raise healthcare professionals’ awareness and centralise patient care in research.
The first part of the article is authored by the patient, describing their experiences, followed by a second part authored by a healthcare professional, reflecting on the patient narrative, underpinning with evidence referenced from available literature.

Practical Approaches/Therapy in Practice Articles
Innovative and novel evidence-based practical guidance on difficult clinical management issues.
These articles aim to provide a succinct and accessible overview of a topic for the broad range of healthcare professionals working with patients, including nurses and primary care physicians.
Practical Approaches/Therapy in Practice articles are designed to concisely review recent evidence relating to a clinical care situation and position this into a practical context.

Summary of Research Articles
Standalone summaries of previously published research for less-specialised or time-poor audiences.
Summary of Research Articles (SRAs) are a standalone text or graphic-based summary of a single previously published source article in clear language. These are designed for a wider audience of healthcare professionals and others who seek quick and easy access to key research findings in areas that may not be within their specific area of expertise- all whilst retaining the scientific meaning and integrity of the data.
These articles have demonstrated value to a diverse audience, and we have found that they also drive readers back to the original article.
Examples include:
- Summary of Research: An Anti-OX40 Antibody to Treat Moderate-to-Severe Atopic Dermatitis: A Multicentre, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Phase 2b Study

Digital features & PLS

Adis Journals offer the option of publishing digital features alongside articles including (but not limited to):
- Videos
- Graphical/Animated abstracts
- Slide decks
- Audio slides
- Podcasts
- Infographics
Digital features can be embedded directly within an article or included as supplementary material.
Authors use them to:
- Increase the visibility of their research
- Reach audiences beyond their own specialty
- Support patient and public engagement with their findings
- Improve how the work travels on social media and in teaching
Plain language summaries (PLS) can be published with any article; these aim to assist readers who have some knowledge of, but not in-depth expertise in, the article content to further understand its importance and clinical relevance. PLS can be text-based or digital (graphical, animated, etc.).
All plain language summaries and digital features are peer reviewed to ensure the factual integrity, balance and clear presentation of information. Digital features also include a “Peer reviewed” stamp and the Adis logo to confirm the rigorous scientific review process that all Adis content undergoes.
The Rapid+ journals also host the majority of digital features on Figshare. The Premier journals do not host digital features on Figshare as default; however, this may be possible on request.
We recommend that features are submitted with the parent manuscript to allow simultaneous peer review. However, authors can submit features after manuscript acceptance, or even publication, of an article.
A fee applies to all features, except text-based plain language summaries, if submitted at any point after acceptance to cover the additional editorial processing.
